The Academy: Our Caddie, Eddie Lowery

Golf historian, writer and collector Ken Janke and acclaimed artist Doug M. Parish, have come together to produce a book filled with the funniest, most poetic and anguished comments over the past five centuries about the game of golf.
The "Caddie" that Doug Parish illustrated for the cover of "Golf is a Funny Game... but it wasn't meant to be", is based on Eddie Lowery, the infamous caddie used by Francis Ouimet to win the 1913 U.S. Open when he was just 10 years old.
Francis Ouimet put American golf on the map. In the early 20th century, golf was dominated by the English and the Scots. In 1913, the great Harry Vardon and his British compatriot Ted Ray were in America for the U.S. Open. Ouimet, an unknown 20-year-old amateur and former caddie, forced the formidable duo into a playoff, then went on to win!
Eddie Lowery (1903-1984) - American caddie, amateur golfer and businessman
The Windsor & District Junior Golf Academy is grateful to Ken Janke and Doug Parish for the privilege of having the illustration of Eddie Lowery for our logo. Eddie's love for the game, his determination, and never say quit attitude is the very essence of the kids involved in our Junior Golf Academy. |
